Upper Mustang, formerly the Kingdom of Lo, is a remote and isolated region in Nepal. Upper Mustang Trek was a restricted demilitarized area until 1992 which makes it one of the most preserved places in the world. Upper Mustang trek is one of the best treks in Himalayas of Nepal.

Foreign visitors have been allowed to the region since 1992, but tourism to Upper Mustang is regulated. Foreigners need to obtain a special permit to enter, costing US$50 per day per person. Most tourists travel by foot over largely the same trade route used in the 15th century. Over a thousand western trekkers now visit each year, with over 2,000.
Upper Mustang is on an ancient trade route between Nepal and Tibet exploiting the lowest 4,660-metre (15,300 ft) pass Kora La through the Himalaya west of Sikkim. This route remained in use until China’s annexation of Tibet in 1950.
There are many ways you have to get to Mustang Valley. Most of the people prefer to go by doing Trekking to Mustang Valley. There is 15 minutes flight scenic flight from Pokhara to Jomsom. Jomsom is headquarter of Mustang Valley, where from normally trekking start.
To those people who have limited time and are keen to witness the aura in this Hidden Kingdom of Lo, Upper Mustang then you can make with Jeep as well because now the road is access all the way to Lo Manthang.
All non-Nepalese resident needs a permit to enter Upper Mustang. Everyone entering the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) area requires an entry permit which costs NPR 3000 (around $30) per person for a single entry.
Besides, if someone is going into Upper Mustang (from Kagbeni onwards), they require a Special Restricted Area Permit (RAP) costs $500 per person for 10 days. If longer is needed, an additional $50 per day is charged.
Unfortunately, you are not allowed to go Upper Mustang with a single permit. Either you have to have a ghost permit or must find the trekking partners.
As across the whole seasons of Nepal, Autumn (September to November) is the best season to visit the incredible Upper Mustang. Excellent weather, great landscape, and magnificent mountain views attract the travelers in this season. As the temperatures range from 12 to 20 degree, Blue skies with clear mountain views make the trekking unforgettable.
The cost of the upper Mustang trek will be more expensive due to the expenses on the permit as the single RAP permit will cost US $ 500. The total cost of the Upper Mustang trek will be $ around US $ 2500 per person for two people. If group size get bigger then sure cost will be less. Trip cost including foods & accommodations during the trek, guide, porter, all the ground transportation, Pokhara – Jomsom – Pokhara domestic airfare, Kathmandu and Pokhara Hotel etc.
Tiji Festival celebrated in the Lo Manthang region by Tibetan Buddhist people is a colorful festival of the Upper Mustang. Celebrated once a year for three days in the beginning of the harvest season, the festival is believed to be celebrated to dispel the demons.
