Gokyo Valley Trek, Everest – 13 DAYS

Overview

Gokyo Lake and Yaks
Gokyo Lake and Yaks

Gokyo valley Trek, Everest lies towards the west of the Khumbu region. In this serene valley, there are abundant pastures for yaks to graze during summer and the pristine turquoise lakes are breathtaking. Gokyo can be visited after trekking up to Everest Base Camp by adding another five days to the itinerary.

From Gokyo, the eight-thousander Cho Oyu (8,153m) is seen towards the north. There are many great views around the valley. The most popular of them is seen by ascending a ridge for 2-3 hours to the north-west to reach a small summit. From here the view is a stupendous panorama extending from Cho Oyu and Everest to Lhotse, and all the way to Makalu. This view is arguably better than the one above Gorak Shep.

  • Day 04

    Acclimatization day in Namche

After having ascended an altitude of 3,440 m (11,253ft), we will use the day for acclimatization. It is very important to have our body prepared for further ascending. You will have the day at your disposal and you can choose to do whatever you wish. One option can be to walk up to the Everest View Point Hotel and enjoy the view it offers. You can also choose to have a walk around Namche Bazaar and observe the local proceedings and lifestyle. If it is Saturday, there will be the traditional “Saturday Market” which is a wonderful experience and a great market to explore. There is also Sherpa Museum in Namche which would be the place to visit if you are interested into Sherpa’s culture and history.

    (3,440 m.) (Lodge)
  • Day 05

    Namche Bazaar to Dole

The trek continues on a well maintained path in the morning with towering mountains on almost every direction. After passing a couple of teahouses at Kyangjuma, the path climbs to a different valley leaving the traditional Everest Trail and crosses Mong La and drops down to Phortse Tenga. With the disappearing views of Taboche peak (6501 meters) and Chola Tse (6440 meters), the trail slowly climbs and reaches Dole.

Beyond the ridge the valley widens as the trail passes through a Chorten and reaches Phangga. We descend to the river bank before climbing up to the terminal moraine of the Ngozamba Glacier on a steep trail. We pass through Longpongo, Raboche Tsho and Dudh Pokhari before reaching Gokyo. On the trail next to the first lake, we see what is believed to be the footprints of a Lama (Buddhist priest). We explore Dudh Pokhari before calling it a night. Overnight in Gokyo.

  • Day 08

    Gokyo Valley: Climb Gokyo Ri

Another short day today starting with a climb out of the small Dole Valley before ascending more gradually up the Dudh Koshi Valley, high above the river. The trail passes many summer settlements, used when Yaks are taken to these pastures for breeding and grazing in the summer months. Ahead of us are excellent views of Cho Oyu while back down the valley are peaks of Kang Taiga and Thamserku. This is a short day, essential for acclimatization and we will arrive at Machhermo in time for lunch. It was here in 1974 that a Yeti was reported to have attacked a Sherpani and killed two Yaks. There is time in the afternoon for acclimatization walks in the surrounding hills for even better views of the surrounding mountains.

    ( 5357m.) (5 - 6 hours) (Lodge)

After reaching the chorten at the edge, we see great views of Thamserku, Cho Oyu, and Kangtega mountains. We walk past Machhermo, Luza and Lhafarma villages before reaching Dole. Overnight in Dole.

On our way to Namche the view of Taboche, Ama Dablam, Thamserku and Kangtega mountains are ours to admire. After walking for a while, we reach an intersection where the trail from Sanasa meets our trail. We walk on a trail that clings to a forested slope beyond Kyangjuma, winding through several bends.
